Smear Test
Protecting Your Health with Cervical Screening
Regular smear tests are one of the easiest and most efficient ways to prevent cervical cancer. We offer compassionate, discrete, and expert smear testing in a caring setting at our Fertility & Gynaecology Clinic.
A cervical screening is not a test for cancer. Instead, it detects changes in the cells of your cervix, or the neck of the womb, which may develop into cancer if left untreated. By detecting these changes early enough to start treatment before they worsen, cervical screening can save the lives of women.
Cervical Screening's Importance
1. Issues can be identified early and treated promptly.
2. Cervical cancer often advances slowly and may not show any symptoms in its early stages
3. Regular smear tests allow doctors to identify abnormal cell changes long before they become dangerous.
4. Cervical screening prevents thousands of cervical cancer cases annually, according to statistics.
5. Regular screenings greatly improve health outcomes for women.
Who Requires a Smear Test?
In general, smear tests are advised for:
- Women between the ages of 25 and 64
- Individuals who engage in or have previously engaged in sexual activity
- Women who have been vaccinated against HPV (although screening is still required)
- Although the frequency of screening can vary, it is generally recommended every three to five years.
- Your doctor might advise more frequent examinations if you have previously experienced abnormal results.
What Happens During a Smear Test?
We understand that many women are nervous about smear tests, even though they are quick and usually take no more than five to ten minutes.
Here’s what to expect:
- You will be asked to lie comfortably on the examination couch.
A tiny device called a speculum is carefully inserted into the vagina to allow unhindered access to the cervix.
- A gentle brush is used to remove a sample of cells from the cervix.
The sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis, which often involves testing for HPV (Human Papillomavirus), the main cause of cervical cancer.
- Although some women may feel a little uneasy, the test shouldn’t hurt.
